The Story

The Off We Go! series was written by Avril Webster and illustrated by David Riley

People behind the Off We Go! Series

I’m Avril, married to Robert and I’m Mum to 3 kids, Stephen, Michael and Rachel. Stephen has special needs (he has a rare chromosomal disorder). We can see he has lots in common with children on the autistic spectrum and children with down syndrome. As well being a Mum, I’m an advocate/lobbyist for those with disabilities. I feel strongly about the importance of including Stephen in as many everyday activities and I have created the Off We Go! series of books to help Stephen and kids like him manage with everyday events.

I’m David, and I’m honoured to have had the opportunity to work with Avril on the ‘Off We Go’ books. I was introduced to Avril through my neighbour, Sandra. Sandra’s daughter and Avril’s son were classmates at St Vincent’s Special School, Lisnagry, Limerick in Ireland. Avril was looking for someone to do artwork for her books, and Sandra thought I’d be just the fit. Turns out she was right, several months and coffee mornings later we had created the first 6 books.

After nine years of working in Illustration and Design, I decided to pursue other interests and I now am studying Computer Game Development at the University of Limerick.

What our customers say

I would recommend these books for families and professionals alike. They are a useful resource to be used as part of preparation for daily living or by therapists for use in narrative therapy groups or as part of topic based literacy or language groups in schools. They could also be used by families as reading books offering early readers the opportunity to bridge the gap between factual and fictional reading.

Speech & Language Therapy in Practice Summer 2010 edition

I just wanted to let you know how beneficial to all of us these books are. They are a GREAT way of preparing children for things to come (shopping, plane rides, dentist visits…). My students’ parents are going to love them!
